The Eternal Substitute | George Gaitanos

George Gaitanos suggests a new order of social understanding.

Numerous film reels assemble the unconventional landscapes of artist George Gaitanos, as single-entity figures reach to the sky seeking light to release their chemical image. Gaitano’s installation uses expired celluloid film to repossess and reassemble harmony within society.

Prior to the Second World War and mass production of plastic, cellulose (the main component of film and primary material in Gaitano’s work) – was established as cutting edge technology through the introduction of the moving image. Amid thermoplast and cellulose, Gaitanos positions himself as the contemporary art breeder, switching the void values of an outdated medium, for a contemporary landscape.

Composer Iannis Xenakis reflects on the new condition of art generated in the mid course of intense social reformation.

“The creative process basically means neo-looking / speculating. And neo-looking results in new forms and new ideas … in the history of art, of ideas, of human relations, there is always continuity, although there is a general notion that revolutions cast completely new, unexplored concepts. New concepts always share a part of the past”

In breeding and cultivating his materials, history and time, George Gaitanos suggests a new order of social understanding.
The original concept of the artwork is a collaborative idea among artists George Gaitanos and Maria Karavassili.

The Artwall Project Space was initiated in July 2012 as a result of collaboration between the Fresh Hotel Athens and CHEAPART. The aim of the Artwall was to showcase contemporary art and become a catalyst for discussion and collaboration among artists and art professionals. The Artwall's program was designed and implemented (2012-2017) by Fotini Kapiris, artist and curator, to meet requirements and standards of contemporary artistic production.
